Behaviour Management CPD Session!
This CPD session offers an engaging and original approach to improving behaviour management practices. Grounded in educational research, this CPD session is interactive, well-structured, and has been successfully tried and tested. The aim of the CPD session is to develop the knowledge, skills, and strategies needed in order to utilise behaviour management even more effectively in lessons, and it achieves this by embarking upon the following learning journey:
1. Fully understanding the various reasons for challenging behaviour;
2. Observing and analysing behaviour management practices through a Youtube video;
3. Evaluating the main behaviour concerns in the participants' school/classrooms
4. Gaining familiarity with a range of research and theory suggesting the best methods and strategies for a number of different challenging situations;
5, Planning effective behaviour management strategies to prevent and combat challenging behaviour in the participants' real-life classrooms.

The Hunger Games - Katniss Everdeen!
This engaging and informative lesson enables students to understand how the lead protagonist of Suzanne Collins’ ‘The Hunger Games’ – Katniss Everdeen - develops as a character throughout the novel. In doing so, students learn how she develops and acquires the key skills, characteristics, beliefs, and values to become the complete dystopian heroine.
The lesson follows a step-by-step learning journey, in which children learn through:
Comprehending how Katniss is initially introduced to the reader;
Reading extracts from Chapters 3, 7 and 14 of The Hunger Games, identifying how Katniss’ character develops;
Analysing how her character fits the role of the ‘Dystopian Hero/Heroine’, and matching her traits to the different features of this character form;
Applying their understanding by creating their own Dystopian Hero/Heroine;
Self assessing their learning attempts.

Noughts and Crosses - KS3 Comprehension Activities Booklet!
This resource booklet contains a wide range of age-appropriate, engaging, and meaningful comprehension activities for use throughout the reading of Malorie Blackman’s ‘Noughts and Crosses.’ Teachers have found them particularly useful in comprehension or guided reading sessions. They are perfect for aiding the progress of children towards meeting the KS3 expectations within the National Curriculum framework. Children have found these resources extremely engaging, and for teachers there is explicit information within each task regarding which comprehension strands the task is designed to demonstrate. They also relate to key extracts, characters, and themes from the story, ensuring that children gain a deep understanding of the text.
Activities within the booklet include:
‘Blackman’s Description’ - to enable students to demonstrate that they can: ‘Know how language, including figurative language, vocabulary choice, grammar, text structure and organisational features, present meaning.’

Fantastic Fronted Adverbials!
This engaging and detailed resource pack has been designed to make the learning of fronted adverbials (particularly prominent in the new curriculum) easily accessible, engaging and interesting for all children. Throughout the lesson, students learn to improve their skill at using appropriate, concise, and precise fronted adverbials within their own writing compositions. In addition to the comprehensive lesson, resources, and plan, it also includes a fronted adverbials writing mat to assist students in building their extended writing skills.
The lesson follows a clear, logical, bite-size learning journey, which guides students towards differentiated learning objectives. Over the course of this journey, they become able to:
- Define what fronted adverbials are;

Informal Letter Writing!
This stimulating and informative lesson develops students’ skill in creating informal letters that precisely meet the content, language and structural features of the form. In particular, they gain an in-depth understanding of how informal letters should be set out on the page, what information should be included within them, and what style they should be written in, in order to meet form, audience and purpose.
Students follow a clear and logical learning journey, in which they:
-Understand why letter writing is still important in the present day;
-Unjumble a model example of an informal letter in order to establish its structure;
-Work collaboratively to identify and analyse the content and language features in further model examples of informal letters;
-Create a success criteria for effective informal letters (although a ready-made success criteria is included);
-Write their own informal letters, using a structure strip and helpsheet (if needed) and the techniques that they have learnt;
-Peer/self-assess their writing attempts.

Being an Upstander - Assembly!
This fun and original assembly aims to inspire children to be ‘upstanders’ who know how to act when they see unsafe or unkind behaviour. The key aims of the session are to:
-Understand why it is important to be an ‘upstander’ and not a ‘bystander;’
-Learn where the word ‘snitch’ comes from and understand why it is never ok to use the word against others in school;
-Know the difference between ‘reporting’ and ‘telling tales.’
This assembly is tried and tested, and has always been really well received in the past. It is comprehensive (24 slides in total - there is enough material for a 30-35 minute assembly or perhaps two 15-20-minute assemblies).
The slides are visually engaging and well-presented, and the subject matter is tailored to the interests and needs of young people. For example, there is an age-appropriate video to help explain the word ‘upstander’, entrance and exit music relating to the key themes, and references to scenarios and dilemmas that they themselves might find themselves in order to help them to make the right choices in their own lives.
No further resources are required - everything that you need to present the assembly is included! It was originally delivered in a primary school, but may be tailored to suit the needs of your own students/ age ranges.
The assembly presentation is fairly self-explanatory, but I’ve included guidance notes to assist the speaker just in case. Hope that you find this useful.
Travel Brochure Writing!
This engaging and stimulating lesson enables students to create travel brochure texts containing appropriate and imaginative language choices, utilising a range of different language techniques with subtlety in order to craft writing that serves the dual purpose of being descriptive and persuasive. In particular, students learn how descriptive language such as of similes, metaphors, and personification, in addition to persuasive devices such as statistics, rhetorical questions, and personal pronouns, can help to create truly authentic and effective travel brochure pieces.
The lesson follows a clear, logical, bite-size learning journey, which guides students towards differentiated learning objectives. Over the course of this journey, they become able to:
- Define what travel brochures are and understand their purposes;
- Identify the persuasive and descriptive language devices that travel brochure writers employ
- Analyse the effects of the language in a model travel brochure text;
- Utilise a clear and challenging success criteria document in order to construct their own travel brochure pieces;
- Self/Peer assess travel writing attempts.

The Wolf Wilder - Reading Comprehension Lesson!
This whole class reading session aims to develop children’s comprehension skills through reading and interpreting the opening section of Katherine Rundell’s ‘The Wolf Wilder.’
The resource pack includes the extract needed and a clear and well presented PowerPoint, guiding the teacher and learners through the various activities. The reading is followed by a series of activities aiming to develop children’s retrieval, explanation, inference, sequencing and summarising skills. A vocabulary check helps to secure children’s understanding of any new or unfamiliar language.
The tasks are comprised of quick-check questions, solo thinking, pair/ group discussions and deeper thinking activities.
The session is best suited for children in years 5-6, although with minor adaptations it could feasibly be used with slightly younger and older year groups.
Of Mice and Men Comprehension Activity Booklet!

The Big Enterprise Project!
This engaging investigation activity allows students to use develop their innovation, creativity and collaboration skills to control the direction of their enterprise project.
The resource set guides students through the entire project, from conception to evaluation, and includes resources/ guidance for the following activities:
-Deciding upon different roles within their groups, in order to carry out multiple tasks effectively;
-Designing a company name and appropriate logo and slogan;
-Researching their product area, including competitors and USPs;
-Conducting market research;
-Budgeting;
-Detailed product design;
-Packaging design;
-Creating instructions for users;
-Formulating and presenting a persuasive pitch;
-Surveying the target audience for their feedback;
-Self-evaluating strengths and areas for development.

There are at least a week’s worth of resources in here, enabling students to fully immerse themselves in the project. I orignally have used this with KS2 and KS3 students, but they could reasonably be adapted for students in KS4.

The Bible - Types of Writing in the Bible!
In this engaging and informative lesson, students learn about the different types of writing in the Bible, consider how these different writing forms get across key messages, and apply this knowledge in creating their own thoughtful texts. They learn through:
-Recalling and remembering how to reference different sections of the Bible;
-Acting as ‘Bible Detectives’, follwing references in order to find different styles of writing;
-Analysing how different styles of writing add to meanings/ messages;
-Considering important messages and lessons that they have been given in their own lives, and applying knowledge of different writing styles to contribute to a ‘Class Bible’;
-Evaluating their ‘Class Bible’ through thought-provoking reflection questions;
This resource pack contains a comprehensive and colourful 17-slide Powerpoint, which guides teachers and students through the learning activities. Challenge activities are provided in order to enrich learning for higher-attaining learners.

Northern Lights - Setting Descriptions!
This engaging and informative lesson enables students to make precise interpretations of the descriptive language used by Philip Pullman in his descriptions of settings in ‘Northern Lights.’ They also learn how the depiction of settings can have a profound impact upon the tone and atmosphere of a novel, and apply this understanding (along with their knowledge of the key language devices) to form their own vivid and imaginative descriptions of places.
The lesson follows a step-by-step learning journey, in which children learn through:
Understanding the power of places and settings, especially the impact that they have on atmosphere and tone;
Defining each of the different types of descriptive devices, through completing an interactive group activity;
Reading extracts from the text in which Pullman describes ‘The North’ and ‘The Bear Palace,’ and identifying the language techniques used to paint an image of place in the minds of the readers;

Animal Farm: Old Major's Dream and The Revolution!
These resources enable students to understand and analyse the Old Major’s dream and the events of the animal revolution, in the opening two chapters of George Orwell’s Animal Farm. More precisely, students learn to make clear and accurate interpretations about events and characters, with appropriate links to the Orwell’s allegory and relationship to context.
Students learn through the following tasks:
- Gauging and collaborating previous knowledge through a discussion-based starter task;
- Reading the first two chapters and demonstrating their understanding through a related activity sheet;
- Developing their understanding of characters and context through a a making links activity;
- Analysing the allegorical nature of the opening chapters by further exploring the connections between characters and contexts;

DT Mechanisms - KS1 Sliders and Levers - Researching!
This engaging and purposeful lesson enables children to understand what slider and lever mechanisms are and consider their uses.
The lesson was originally taught as a part of a series of lessons created to guide children towards creating polar slider and lever scenes, but the resources can easily be adapted to fit your own particular project.
This first lesson helps children to:
-Understand what slider and lever mechanisms are;
-Consider objects, vehicles and tools that use slider and lever mechanisms;
-Understand how slider and lever mechanisms work, including introducing children to the key vocabulary (e.g. bridge, slot, pivot, etc);
-Begin thinking about design considerations for creating a polar slider/ lever mechanisms picture.
Included is an eye-catching and comprehensive 17-slide PowerPoint presentation, and a research template (in both Word and PDF).
These lessons were originally created for children in years 1-2, but may be adapted for slightly older and younger year groups. The other lessons in the series are available on this site individually, or all of the lessons can be purchased as a part of a bundle.
